Anxiety is a normal reaction that we experience once in a while. This is also referred to as worry or angst. Usually, we experience anxiety when we are in a situation that we lose control. Undesirable feelings of dread, worry or fear are usually created. There are a number of factors why people become anxious and that include medications. The antidepressant medication Paxil may cause feelings of anxiety and this is actually listed as a common side effect of the medication. Apart from that, Paxil belongs to SSRI antidepressants which can cause possible sexual dysfunction when taken by an individual.
When felt in excess, anxiety can turn into a disorder. Anxiety is then referred to as a general term for disorders which can cause feelings of nervousness, apprehension, fear and intense worrying. Several types are under anxiety disorders and some of the most common can be found below.
• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
GAD is characterized by excessive worrying. This is usually recurrent and can be long-standing. These people are viewed as “worrywarts” because they tend to blow their worries out of proportion. It is difficult for them to control their anxiety once it sets in.
A phobia is defined as an irrational fear to a situation or object. Phobia may elicit similar symptoms of GAD. However, the trigger for the reaction is identified and the cause is specific unlike GAD. The individual suffering from a specific phobia may have an undesirable reaction to the stimuli but he/she can’t control the anxiety that was triggered by it. A number of phobias are identified in the medical community. For example, claustrophobia is the fear of being in an enclosed space.
• Panic Disorder
This is a type of anxiety disorder which involves sudden attacks of intense terror. Symptoms would include shaking, dizziness, nausea and difficulties in breathing. Panic attacks are abrupt and may last from minutes to hours. Attacks may be triggered by chronic stress or frightening experiences but sometimes, it could also be spontaneous.
• Separation Anxiety
Separation Anxiety is characterized by intense feelings of anxiety when one is separated or taken from his/her comfort zone. This is most commonly seen in toddlers and school-age children. This condition may be resolved over time or it might have a long term effect on the child. Some conditions such as Paxil birth defects may affect the child’s health while growing up.
